Who can give vaccinations?

Funded and unfunded vaccines can be given by your doctor, nurse, midwife and some paramedics and pharmacists who have been trained as vaccinators.

There are also other healthcare providers (eg, kaiāwhina) who have received training to give you certain vaccinations under supervision.

Different providers may have restrictions on what vaccinations can be given, or the ages of people they can administer these to. So it’s worth checking with the provider first to see if you or your whānau can get the vaccination needed from them.

Read more about which vaccinations are available through some pharmacies.

Where can I get vaccinated?

There are many different settings in which you can get a vaccination. These include:

  • Medical or health centres.
  • Pharmacies.
  • Community-based clinics including marae-based clinics.
  • mobile health clinics and mobile vaccination services that move around to different retail shops within a local community (eg, supermarkets or hardware shops). Some providers have mobile teams that can come to your home to vaccinate .

Read about how to find these providers in the ‘how to search the Healthpoint directory’ section below.

What if I have a disability?

If you have a disability and would like to know about the accessibility of different providers, or if you can get an immunisation at home, contact the Disability team by phoning 0800 11 12 13, texting 8988 or emailing access@whakarongorau.nz.

Below is some guidance on how to use Healthpoint to find a local healthcare provider who can vaccinate you and your whānau.

  • To find an immunisation provider using the Healthpoint directory visit www.healthpoint.co.nz/immunisation(external link) and choose the vaccination you want to receive from the menu on the left hand side.
  • You can also refine the results of the search by choosing specific accessibility (eg, anyone can access or no appointment required) and specific organisations (eg, Kaupapa Māori or community pharmacy).
  • To watch a video on ‘How to find health service information on Healthpoint’, visit the videos page on Healthpoint.(external link)

If you don’t have wifi you can access the Healthpoint directory without data(external link).

In December 2023, the Aotearoa Immunisation Register (AIR) replaced the National Immunisation Register (NIR). The AIR records your immunisation history. This information helps your healthcare provider find out what vaccines you and your whānau have been given and when. Having this information available helps guide any recommendations for future vaccinations.
