In a new podcast series, Movember Radio: Continuing the Conversation, Richie McCaw talks about how he keeps himself grounded by having friends outside of rugby and an engaging hobby: flying.
The series aims to lift the lid on society’s often damaging ideals about masculinity and challenge listeners to re-think what it really means to be a man.
Richie talks about how even seemingly bulletproof men aren’t immune to physical and mental struggles.
“From the outside everything can look sweet, like you’ve got it all under control, but someone could be having all sorts of problems, for all sorts of reasons,” Richie says.
Richie recalls suffering a concussion in 2004 that sent him to a dark place and talks about how important it is – if you see a mate struggling – to have a talk with them and not turn your back.
He praises fellow All Black great Sir John Kirwan’s books and efforts in promoting positive mental health.
Watch Richie and the boys in action at 2pm (NZ time) today (Wednesday 8th July) in their historic match in Samoa.
