Do you need a digital detox these holidays? While smartphones allow you the convenience of being constantly connected and available, it can be hard to take a real break if your phone is constantly beeping and you’re always checking it. So why not switch off and enjoy some digital-free time. You might be surprised how awesome it is!
Here are five benefits of switching off:
1. You’ll have more time
The internet and social media are the biggest time-wasters ever. Have you ever added up how much time you spend watching cat videos or reading other people’s social media posts? Switch off and you’ll be amazed at all the time you suddenly have on your hands.
2. You’ll connect with family and friends
There’s nothing like a face-to-face conversation or doing something with your family and friends that doesn’t involve a screen. Sit down and have a yarn with family members or friends, especially ones you haven’t seen in a while, and connect in a meaningful way.
3. You’ll be in the moment
There’s nothing worse than being with someone who is distracted by their phone and constantly checking it. Switch your phone off and be in the present moment. Enjoy what is happening right now – you’ll love it!
4. You’ll be less stressed
Being constantly pestered by messages or alerts can be disruptive and stressful. Also, things can be misconstrued via texts or emails. Take a break from work emails especially – the world will not end if you don’t check them out of hours (unless you’re in the life-saving business!).
5. You’ll appreciate your own life
There’s nothing worse than looking at other people’s glotos* or social media posts and feeling envious or comparing yourself to them. Their images and updates are not always representative of the truth and often only tell half the story. Who cares what they’re bragging about – appreciate all the good things in your own life.
*Gloto: photo of someone gloating over their holiday or gift etc.
