This app has a large food database and a range of recipes with nutritional analysis. It is aimed at people with kidney disease or other conditions such as high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes and osteoporosis who require a modified diet. Based on their personalised health profile, the app provides the user with information of their nutritional requirements. It uses a traffic light system with ticks and crosses to highlight the suitability of foods. You can also set personal goals (dietary intake targets) depending on your health profile. The app has educational tips, breaking health news and health-related nutritional programs.
For the complete app description, go to either Google Play (android) or iTunes (apple).
The app uses the current American renal (kidney) guidelines and three meals with one snack per day as basis for data comparison.
It promotes seeking support and ability to email information to registered dietitian.
Links to educational material on National Kidney Foundation (NKF) website.
The food database is not very relevant to New Zealanders.
There is no function to record food or total daily intake.
The comparisons of foods are difficult since the presented portion sizes are different (some 100g portions, some ‘serve size’).

Reviewer: Dietitian App Review Working Group, Auckland DHB, May 2015. Clinical score: ★★★☆☆ Review: "For individuals and/or health professionals who are looking for further support regarding suitability of individual foods or recipe ideas. Users will need a good level of understanding about their condition such as the stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Other than sourcing suitable recipes or foods there are limited additional functions on this app. Provides useful links to the National Kidney Foundation website where significant information can be found about CKD. Safety concerns: none." New Zealand relevance: ★★☆☆☆ Comment: "Americanized app that requires unit conversions which may be challenging to the New Zealand user. The app has mainly US products - users may find the lack of New Zealand products and recipes restrictive."
