Suicide Prevention
New Zealand has one of the highest suicide rates in developed countries. Promoting positive mental wellbeing, understanding warning signs to look for, and learning about what help is available are some of the ways we can prevent suicide and suicidal behaviour.
Key Points:
- Become more aware of suicide risk factors and why people choose to take their own life.
- Understand the warning signs and tipping points for suicide and learn about early detection and interventions.
- Resilience helps you bounce back when the going gets tough. Learn skills to build your own resilience.
- Learn tips for understanding and supporting someone who is feeling suicidal, someone bereaved by suicide, or someone recovering from a suicide attempt.
- If you are having suicidal thoughts tell someone you trust. This can be very hard to do but is very important.

If you are feeling suicidal or supporting someone who is suicidal you can call for help immediately
- Call 111 (police, ambulance, fire) or
- Call Lifeline Freephone 0800 543 354 or
- Get someone to take you to your local hospital emergency department
