Endometriosis

This is a common condition which only affects women, where tissue that resembles the uterine lining is growing outside the uterus on other structures within the pelvic region. Just like the lining of the uterus, this tissue responds to the monthly hormone cycle. Over time, these patches of tissue can thicken to form cysts or plaques and scar tissue or adhesions can form in response.

Key Points:

  1. Endometriosis is very common and affects up to 1 in 10 women and teenage girls
  2. Taking care of yourself such as keeping active, eating well and managing stress are very important
  3. If you have pelvic pain or painful periods, see your GP
  4. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to reduce possible complications such as fertility problems
